STEVE WATERMAN
COMPOSITIONS FOR CLARINET AND PIANO
RED VEST MAN
Solo clarinet with piano accompaniment
Red Vest Man is composed for legendary cornet player Buddy Bolden, one of the first jazz musicians. He always played wearing a red vest, hence the title. The piece takes the form of a mournful New Orleans funeral march followed by a lively New Orleans second line style. While a clarinet solo in an improvised style has been written, there are also chord symbols for the clarinet player to improvise their own solo.
If you are new to improvising, try taking some of the written out ideas and playing around with them to form your own solo.
Chord symbols have also been included in the piano part during the improvisation sections.
